DiskAid is a freeware utility that allows you to use your iPhone (or iPod touch) as a portable hard drive. All you do is install the program (it’s available for both Windows and Mac), then connect your device. DiskAid automatically detects it and provides a familiar tree-like interface for creating folders, copying files, and so on. Best of all, you don’t have to “jailbreak” your unit in order to use the program.

Admittedly, iPhone/touch storage space tends to be at a premium, but if you need a simple way to carry some important files or just want to make an on-the-fly backup of an important document, this is a killer solution. Keep in mind that while you can also copy over MP3s, videos, and the like, you won’t actually be able to play them on your device — for that you still need iTunes.

Voice-over-IP service iCall lets you make and receive free calls anywhere in the U.S. and Canada — as long as you’re sitting at your PC. But now iPhone users can get in on the action: A new iCall applet for iPhone enables free calling anywhere there’s a Wi-Fi hotspot.

You’ll also have the option to transfer inbound calls to Wi-Fi, thus saving those pricey AT&T minutes. iCall offers custom voicemail options and access to your existing address book.

You can’t get the applet yet, but TechCrunch suspects it’ll be available next week as part of Apple’s new iPhone App Store. Could be a winner — we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, check out the demo video.
